Meridien Hotel, Cairo, Egypt
Project Description:
WBTA won an international design competition for this convention hotel and retail complex, which will open in the year 2000. The project encompasses an 870-guestroom addition to the existing Meridien Hotel, one of Cairo’s most visible landmarks. WBTA designed the adjacent large retail mall, as well.
A curved, “Y”-shaped tower was conceived by the architects to provide all guestrooms in the 40-story addition with a view of Cairo on the Nile. The tall addition was sensitively designed so as not to diminish the size or importance of the existing hotel. WBTA devised a strong sculptural composition that balances the curved mass of the existing, smaller landmark hotel.
